Organic Carrier Oils
Organic Carrier Oils in Canada
Organic Carrier oils are one of the most important parts of making an essential oil. Unfortunately, they are also the most overlooked. This is mainly because carrier oils don’t directly offer any therapeutic value to an essential oil preparation. But a carrier oil can make or break a topical or aromatherapy essential oil. They are extracted from vegetables like olives, almonds, or coconuts. It’s important to consider the scent of the carrier oil you’re using. For example, if you’re making lavender essential oil for aromatherapy, the carrier oil you use should have a neutral scent in order to allow the scent of the lavender to flourish.
Using Carrier Oils
Using a carrier oil helps prevent evaporation and dilutes potent aromas, but does not reduce therapeutic benefits. You should also take into account the viscosity of the organic carrier oil. For example, if you’re making a massage oil, you’ll want to use a thin oil like grapeseed or almond oil for easy absorption and good lubrication. Olive oil would be much thicker hindering lubrication during a massage. Carrier oils can also be mixed to get the desired viscosity.
A carrier oil should be stored in airtight containers and in dark, cool, and dry areas. This will prevent them from going rancid and increase the length of their shelf life.
